Awesome Eats on Wheels: Our Favorite Food Trucks in LA
January 18, 2014

A couple of months ago, Ruth from Tanama Tales, wrote an interesting post on the food truck craze. She defined the fares offered by food trucks as “a type of street food (but maybe on a higher gourmet level).” We think she got it right, at least based on what we know of the Los Angeles street food scene, which is largely represented by food trucks that offer everything from cupcakes to mac and cheese and peanut butter sandwiches, just to mention a few. Add in sites such as findlafoodtrucks.com, and it’s easy to see why more and more locals and visitors are getting in on the food truck action. Below are some of our favorite mobile commissaries, which we hope you’ll check out (if you haven’t yet) whenever you’re in need of some epicurean inspiration.
1. Frysmith: Love fries? Then you’re going to love Frysmith’s menu, which run the gamut from Chili Cheese Fries to Kimchi Fries to Rajas Fries (a must try!). Be forewarned though, Frysmith’s offerings are definitely not for the faint of heart. But we guess you already know that. Still, there’s something to be said for the company’s commitment to ethical eating. No factory-farmed meat, plastic forks, or non-recyclable glass bottles here. Only biodegradable materials including biodiesel from fry oil to run their trucks’ engines.
2. Bollywood Bites: If there is one word to describe Bollywood Bites’ fares, it would be ‘authentic.’ This food truck is all about rich Indian cuisine and is run by Sanjay Patel, who is quite popular in the Hollywood social scene (just check his pictures with celebrities when you visit the website). Bollywood Bites serves crowd favorites such as chicken tikka masala, lamb kima, chicken curry, and so on.
3. Sugar Babies Cupcakery: Guilt-free – that’s how sisters slash owners Rachel and Kassandra describe their cupcakes. And true enough the signature mini treats are just enough to satisfy your sweet but I-don’t-want-to-go-crazy-with-the-sugar tooth. Topping our list of recommendations for this food truck is the Breakfast at Tiffany’s cupcake, which is made of moist vanilla cake, sweet vanilla buttercream frosting, and candied pearls.
4. Pnut Butter Bar: Is there anything more nostalgic than a good ol’ PB&J sandwich? We are totally impressed with this food truck’s menu, not just because it takes us back to our childhood but because we simply can’t get over the many creative ways Kharyn D (owner) has used peanut butter. Do try our personal favorite – Choconut Monkey (Pnut Butter/Nutella/Banana) if you ever happen to be near a Pnut Butter Bar truck.
5. The Mac ‘n’ Roll Truck: Comfort food at its finest, this food truck serves 6 delicious flavors of Mac ‘n’ Cheese, Mac Rolls, beverages, and desserts. Owned by the same geniuses (Constance Ford, Ivy Pruss, and Chef Steve Peters) who brought us The Grilled Cheese Truck, Mac ‘n’ Roll also caters special events such as birthdays, film shoots, office parties, and more.
