The Future Of In-Car Technology
May 14, 2014

People spend a great amount of time in cars, to the point where some might even consider it their second home. As a result, in-car technology has become a hot topic, because increasingly consumers want their cars to utilize the latest technologies. In-car technologies also have safety considerations that must be adhered to strictly, for the safety of the driver and others. So most in-car technologies are built specifically for cars and their unique safety requirements.
While it’s inevitable that cars will only become more and more technologically advanced, what type of advancements will happen are always fodder for speculation and conjecture. New technologies are always being tested, as companies try to stay ahead of their competitors.
Communication Between Cars
One of the technologies that is gaining traction is the technology that enables cars to communicate with each other and even able to sense the objects around them. This is a particularly important technology, because it can prevent major accidents from happening due to human error. Drivers get into avoidable accidents all the time doing such careless things as:
- Running red lights,
- Ignoring stop signs
- Making illegal turns
- Texting while driving
Even with fatal accidents, most of them could’ve been avoided if both drivers had been paying attention to what was going on around them. And now cars might able to assist the drivers in avoiding accidents. In the future if one car is about to collide with the other car, a warning can be transmitted between cars. This could go a long way towards decreasing accident rates.
Driverless Cars
Google has already created a driverless car. But in the future, driverless cars may become more prevalent, and even a staple on public roads. Other major companies like GM have also done their own testing and many believe that self-driving cars could reduce the amount of accidents that happen on the road. This could radically change the way people get around, if and when the cars become mass-produced for the public.
Airbags For Cars
Everyone knows about airbags for humans, which received a considerable amount of press when they were first introduced to the public. But now cars might get their own airbags. Technology is being tested where airbags will help protect the car from the full impact of a crash. This will help protect the vehicle from getting badly damaged, and also increase the passengers’ safety when a crash does happen.
Flying Cars
As fantastical as this may sound, some companies are researching how to make flying cars a reality. The benefits of this futuristic advancement are evident, from reducing traffic to expediting travel that would take long periods of time. But the reality is that new advancements in materials, engineering, and design might make flying cars a reality sooner than people might expect. While the notion of flying cars has been around for decades, making that dream a reality has always proved to be a difficult task.
There are also a laundry list of safety requirements that would need to be made for flying cars to be safe for civilians to use. But particularly for traffic-weary commuters in heavily populated urban areas, a flying car seems like a dream come true. There are already working prototypes of the flying car. A company named Terrafugia that manufactures planes has said that they will soon release a flying car that could be available to wealthy people who are willing to pay over $200,000 dollars for one.
Some of the previously mentioned technologies will probably hit the market in some form eventually. While other advancements like flying cars could radically change how people get around. Hundreds of years from now, the roads might be filled with driverless cars and the sky filled with flying cars.
