History Of The Vehicle Wrap
March 31, 2014

Vehicle wraps are graphics that are printed on vinyl and then applied to a vehicle. They are widely used, because almost any type of graphic can be printed and effectively used. Vehicle wraps are most commonly seen on cars racing in NASCAR and on vehicles advertising a product or service. In any big city in the United States, a vehicle with a wrap can be seen all the time on many different vehicles.
Recently, rappers and hip-hop artists have found vehicle wraps to be an effective way to promote their music. But there is actually quite an interesting history behind the vehicle wrap that most people don’t know about. For example, the vehicle wrap actually first originated in the UK, not in the United States.
And the first vehicle that was wrapped was actually a taxi. While perhaps not surprising in hindsight, the usage of the vehicle wrap has undergone quite an evolution. Like many great ideas, it started out serving a utilitarian function, but then proved to have a great deal many more uses and applications.
German Taxis
Vehicle wraps first served more of a utilitarian purpose upon their inception. It was first conceived as a vinyl that could be used on German taxis so that that would be the beige color that was required by law. Vehicle wraps proved a cost-effective and versatile means to achieve this goal.
The other great benefit of vehicle wraps was that the original black color of the vehicle could be maintained, so that when the wrap was eventually removed years later, the original paint of the car was untouched and undamaged. This was especially useful in this case, because all the cars were originally black, and to be sold at a later time they still needed to be black.
So instead of painting the vehicle beige, a vehicle wrap provided an easy way to change the color of the car without re-painting it. And after several years, the vehicle wrap could be removed and the car would be black and ready to sell again.
The Evolution Continues
Once people were able to see how versatile vehicle wraps were they were used to advertise. Vehicle wraps could navigate the complex curves and crevices of any vehicle, and the print quality and appearance would still be high quality. Vehicle wraps were also used in other countries, including the United States, where they have continued to grow in popularity. They are used for many reasons now, such as:
- Food Truck Graphics
- NASCAR advertising
- Hip-Hop Promotions
- Personal customized vehicles
They are cost-effective, high-quality, and have a quick turnaround time. In addition to advertising, people have also used vehicle wraps to customize their own cars. This is especially true for celebrities, who want to take that extra step towards customizing their personal vehicles.
Celebrities such as Snooki and Sylvester Stallone have utilized vehicle wrap customization. Hip-hop artists, in particular, have embraced the vehicle wrap as a way to customize their vehicle and also promote their music.
The Versatility Of Vehicle Wraps
Vehicle wraps are widely noted for how versatile they are. The entirety of a vehicle, or just a portion, can be covered with a wrap. They also generally don’t damage the original paint of the car, and in fact can even protect the paint over the years. And any type of graphic can be printed on the vinyl and applied to a wide range of vehicles.
Another benefit of a vehicle wrap is that if a phone number or something else needs to be changed, that one particular part of the wrap can be easily re-printed and replaced. What started out as a way to solve the problem of making German taxis beige has evolved into an effective marketing tool for companies.
