How to Design Truck Graphics That Sell
January 22, 2014

It’s been said that vehicle wraps including truck graphics are designed to command attention. Perhaps it’s the almost unlimited design possibilities or the fact that the visual competition – from billboards to banners to other wrapped vehicles is proving stronger as time passes by that has companies looking for ways to design truck graphics that sell. And therein lies the challenge because essentially, vehicle wraps should not just be pleasing to look at; these must also successfully convey marketing messages that increase revenue and brand visibility. Now, if you are an owner or a marketer who is planning to use truck graphics to promote a product or a service, or generate buzz for your company, you may want to consider some of the tried and tested vehicle wrap design tips below:
Tip #1: Assess your working space before deciding on a design.
Obviously, it’s not enough that you have a fleet of vehicles on the ready during the design process. You must also consider the shape and size of individual units in your fleet before you decide on a design. It doesn’t make much sense printing truck graphics that require larger sheets of vinyl when the vehicles you have in your garage are all motorcycles. Likewise, if you have box trucks to dress, it wouldn’t work if your template is for a car or a van or a bus. Fortunately for you, there are vehicle wrap designers who are well-versed with regards to dimensions and know how to use vector-based software like Adobe Illustrator.
Tip #2: Knowing the differences among overdesigned, under designed, and just right.
Ever watched an episode of Project Runway? Well, if you have never seen even a commercial for the show, you would do well to remember one piece of advice that is regularly uttered by the judges with regards to design. Knowing when to edit is a skill that any designer should develop whether it is in fashion or in the truck graphics industry. Granted, clothes and vehicle wraps are two different animals, but both must follow certain rules to be sellable. With truck wraps, the copy and graphics must be limited to visually digestible levels, which mean that no matter how tempted you are to present every bit of information that you have about your company, you must refrain from doing so. This is where you should work closely with your vehicle wrap designer to come up with a design that is creative without overshadowing your marketing message.
Tip #3: Be mindful of the basic considerations.
This tip doesn’t just apply to truck graphics. When it comes to vehicle wrap design, it should be a given that the end result must be appreciated by onlookers whether the car or truck or van or bus is sitting in traffic or passing in the fast lane. Seams and windows must also be factored into the design process as the last thing you want is to distort the copy or the graphics if these are placed on curves or molding. These also apply to phone numbers, websites, and addresses – key information that cannot be left out when designing a vehicle wrap.
